Ford Styling brochure / 1956

You can see the 1963 Ford Styling book in the November 2011 Archive.  It was a much more flamboyant look at the subject and did its best to suggest that Ford car styling was closely connected to several centuries of art and the last two hundred years or so of product design.

Amfac Annual Report / 1982

Amfac (AMerican FACtors) was one of those companies that had been around for years under various names and was mainly involved with agriculture in Hawaii.  In the sixties and seventies, like so many companies, it became a conglomerate more concerned with acquiring non-core businesses until 2002 when it went into Chapter 11.
The reason I kept this Report was because of the seven lovely collages in the front pages.  Many of the images were hand-colored by Elaine Keenan and Sara Anderson.  The fold-out cover painting was by Bill W Dodge (check out his website).  Credits for the design go to Peterson Hinrichs & Shakery, who also did the 1981 Potlatch Report in the December Archive.
I’ve only included the first twenty-seven pages, the remaining twenty-nine include four about the company divisions and the Financial section.

'Modern wonders' cigarette cards / mid-thirties

The high-tech world of the mid-thirties according to Churchman cigarettes.  Forty-eight larger (68 by 53 mm) than normal size cards that covered a fascinating range of mechanical and electrical developments mixed in with some that had been around for years: the Queen Mary going into the Southampton graving dock.
Fortunately not many cards were devoted to weird transport (the Dynasphere) which could provide a set of its own.  Instead the subjects chosen reflected more of the biggest or the strongest in the industrial world.
Mitchell’s cigarettes issued a set of fifty black and white cards in 1936 called the World of Tomorrow which had looked into the future based on some of the ideas in the Modern wonders set.
